The Cebu Disability Disaster Risk Reduction Network (CDIDRRN), Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management office (PDRRMO) and the A2D Project – Research for Alternative to Development Inc., conducted a “Roadshow Caravan” in coordination with the Dalaguete’s Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office on October 14, 2016 at Dalaguete Health Management Complex.
Ma. Gena B. Buenconsejo, Head of Community Development Unit Head (ComDev) welcomed the guests, poster-making contestants from national high schools and elementary schools together with their coaches as well as the participating persons with disability (PWDs) who came from coastal and midland barangays.
With the theme “Raising Awareness, Reducing Mortality,” the event was in line with the celebration of the International Day for Disaster Reduction. The aim was to give awareness to PWDs about the things they should do and the things that they should keep with them during disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons and fire. Presentations related to disaster risk reduction and management were given by Resource Persons. Volunteers of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) were given disaster scenarios involving PWDs and were coached on how to deal with these situations. The Caravan Team also shared some of their disaster experiences. Afterwards, the PWDs were made to participate in games and prizes such as t-shirts, whistles, flashlights, raincoats and blankets were given to the winners.
Part of the one–day event was the Poster Making Contest which was participated by different elementary & high schools. Mark Lawrence Medillo of Cawayan Central Elementary School was declared as the champion while Alex Aparre of Alcoy National High School bagged the 2nd place. Shamika Dalogdog of Dalaguete National High School got the 3rd place while Kim Andrei A. Fano of Sangat National High School coveted the 4th place.
It was indeed a great privilege for Dalaguete’s PWDs who learned a lot about the disaster risk reduction during the Caravan. With the commitment of the DRRM volunteers and the planned projects and activities of the municipal government, the PWDs are confident that they would be safe during disasters.
